Ana Jerković, Student

Hi, Ana!

You joined us through “The Best for the Best” joint scholarship of the City of Osijek and local companies. How come you chose Base58 from the list of available companies?

HI! Out of the all companies that were on the list, Base58 seemed to fit my interest the most. And when I researched a bit more I became even more interested. I was especially curious about the blockchain aspect of the work because it was something I have never had the chance to properly learn about.

We’re glad we could help. Do you like how it’s going? What have you learned up to now?

It’s going amazing so far. I did not expect it to be so fulfilling and for me to learn so much in such a short period. I am learning skills and things that will help me in the future but also some that are currently helping me with my studies.

Osijek is a city packed with students and many came from other cities to study here. In your opinion, what makes Osijek a perfect place to study and live?

Osijek is an amazing city for students. There are a ton of interesting places to visit like restaurants, cafes, and clubs. Osijek is a relatively small city and simple to navigate in, so it’s not hard to get used to it and you can quickly learn where everything is.

That’s a fact. Sometimes less really is more. So, what are your studies, and what/who inspired you to choose that particular study?

I study software engineering at FERIT. I was inspired by my high school computer science professor. She always encouraged me to work harder and she made me realize I could have a future in this field.

Is that what you wanted to be when you "grow up"? I know I’m happy with my current job, but I remember I wanted to be an opera singer when I was a kid. And to the regret of my parents, I exercised regularly. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

When I was very young I wanted to be a ballerina, but that dream was crushed soon enough when I realized you have to train a lot and make sacrifices I wasn’t ready to make. As I got older I became more realistic regarding my dream job and I am currently very happy with the field I have chosen.

Nice to hear! Tell us, what do you enjoy most about your education?

I enjoy the fact that the field I am currently studying has a variety of different paths I can take, which allows me to be more creative and versatile in my studies. I love the fact that there is always something new to learn and the ability to always further perfect your skills.

And how would you describe yourself as a student?

As a student, I am really hard-working, organized, and inquisitive.

Of all the skills you’ve gained during your studies, which are extra helpful? Or maybe an obstruction?!

Some helpful skills are my curiosity and hardworkingness, but one that is definitely an obstruction is my tendency to overthink.

Yeah, I get that. I tend to overthink sometimes, too. And many others, for that matter. Luckily, it’s a habit that can be reduced. Anyway, what kind of people do you cooperate best with?

I cooperate best with people who aren’t lazy and care about the project we are working on. I like to work in an environment where people feel free to be creative and put out ideas.

I agree - freedom to contribute is important for a successful project outcome. But it’s okay to fail, too. As long as you learn something from it. Tell us about a time you failed or made a mistake. How did you handle it?

The most recent example I can remember is failing an exam I worked really hard for. I felt very disappointed after I found out I had failed, but I dusted myself off and studied more for the next one and I passed that one. The moral of the story is to never give up because if you work hard enough things will work out.

Here’s to that! But we’re sure there are way more wins than losses when it comes to you. What academic or other accomplishments are you most proud of?

The accomplishment I am most proud of is acquiring a black belt in TaeKwonDo.

That’s impressive! Then I should choose my questions wisely. :) Let’s try this one: Who would you select as a mentor if you could choose anybody?

I would select someone who has succeeded in my field of interest and someone who had to overcome some obstacles along the way. I would want my mentor to guide me through all the ups and downs I could encounter along the way and to make sure I reach my full potential.

Okay, I see a leadership skill right there. What does true leadership mean to you?

A true leader is someone I can trust to make smart choices and guide me through tough decisions. A true leader should have integrity and self-awareness, and ensure that the individuals reach their full potential.

Time for the lighter topics - it's the weekend and you want it to be perfect. What do you do?

Sleep in, then watch my favourite show, read a good book, or paint during the day. Then in the evening I'd go out and catch up with some friends. I mostly like spending time alone and having “me time” - I find it very peaceful and stress-relieving.

From the sound of it, music is probably also a part of that perfect feel (see what I did there). What’s the last song you listened to?

The last song I listened to was Popular St by Glass Animals. I love their music and this is my favorite song on their How To Be A Human Being album.

Can’t say I’ve heard of them, but I’ll check it out. What about traveling? What are some of your favourite memories?

I love travelling and I would love to travel all across the world. My favourite memory has got to be the week I spent in Portugal as a part of the Erasmus student exchange program. I spent the week exploring the culture, trying new foods, and meeting new people.

One meal that you wouldn’t eat again even if someone offers you millions is?

Snails, for sure. Way too slimy for my taste.

Agreed. Didn’t try, though. And never will. Let’s finish up with something quite original: What is your favourite quote or motto?

My favourite quote is definitely “What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.” by Nietzsche

Thank you, Ana, for sharing a bit about yourself with us!

p.s. I liked the song. Would recommend :)
